In many cultures arranged marriages take place. In an arranged marriage, the prospective spouses have a choice whether or not to accept the arrangements that their families make for their marriage.

A forced marriage is completely different to an arranged marriage. In a forced marriage, either one or both of the parties do not consent to the marriage taking place, and pressure or abuse is used. Such pressure can be physical, sexual, emotional, psychological or even financial. Forced marriage is therefore a type of domestic abuse.

What can be done?

A forced marriage protection order can be granted by the court to offer protection to people who may be forced into marriage, or from attempts to force them to do so. The court takes into consideration all the circumstances of the case including the need to secure the health, safety and wellbeing of the person needing protection. If you are in fear that you will be the victim of forced matter or a third party concerned about someone else, please do not hesitate to contact us.
